New Free Windows System Tool from Sysinternals

It isn’t often that we get a brand-new addition to the famous suite of free system tools provided at Windows Sysinternals and when we do it’s worth noting. Mark Russinovich has just announced a tool called Sysmon.

System Monitor (Sysmon) is a Windows system service and device driver that, once installed on a system, remains resident across system reboots to monitor and log system activity to the Windows event log. It provides detailed information about process creations, network connections, and changes to file creation time. By collecting the events it generates using Windows Event Collection or SIEM agents and subsequently analyzing them, you can identify malicious or anomalous activity and understand how intruders and malware operate on your network.

Sysmon is a command-line tool for experienced Windows users and adds some interesting new system monitoring and logging capabilities. The download is a 465 KB zipped file containing an executable and a EULA.

CryptoLocker Encryption Cracked. How To Get Your Files Back.

Over the past few months, one of the most dangerous viruses affecting computers has been Cryptolocker. Once infected, the virus encrypts all of the document files on your PC, and then demands payment (usually by Bitcoin) in order to divulge the necessary decryption key. Replace Gmail’s Ads With Details Of Your Email Contacts

Here’s a neat extension for users of the Chrome and Firefox web browsers. Rapportive automatically looks up information on the web about the person whose message you’re currently reading, and displays it on the right hand side of the page in a separate panel. The system can trawl social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, even if you’re not a member of those systems yourself. If there are pictures of the person available online, Rapportive can often track those down too, and display them for you.

Not only does Rapportive add useful social information to your overall Gmail experience, but it also displays its information in the panel that Gmail would normally use to display adverts. So you get 2 benefits for the price of, well, none, because Rapportive is free.
